Diary Shows Microsoft Threatened IBM with Windows Authorship

Prosecutors in the Department of Justice antitrust trial have announced they will include excerpts from an IBM executive's diary detailing threats from Microsoft, one of which includes the Redmond company's taunt of telling the public IBM was responsible for writing the code to Windows.

"When we introduce [the diary] in court, it will show the despicable level Microsoft feels free to reach because it has a strong monopoly," said Dan Gerous, lead DOJ attorney.

Gerous said Microsoft began harassing IBM to make Windows NT the standard operating system on their popular mainframe computers, but IBM ignored the demands.

"So [Microsoft] felt, if they couldn't get their way, they'd try to ruin IBM's reputation," he said.

IBM is supposedly mulling a lawsuit to recover damages from business lost due to potential customers thinking they are responsible for writing the code to the software giant's front-end to DOS.
