Microsoft Announces Release of Windows, Browser that Fits on a Floppy

To counter an announcement by realtime-OS maker QNX Software Systems Ltd. -- which offers a bootable Web browser on a floppy diskette -- Microsoft Corp. announced their own plans to release a version of Windows and Internet Explorer that fits on a floppy, dubbed Windows for Floppy Diskettes, or WinFlop.

"We've been working on this longer than QNX, it's simply a coincidence that we are making this announcement now," said Rob N. Plunder, head of Microsoft's catch-up technology division. "Our customer surveys have indicated the desire for this ability, so we are just letting them know a product will shortly be available."

Microsoft released a photograph showing the proposed product, which looks like a miniature software box that is smaller than a diskette. Software analysis expert, Everyn Paine, was one of the first to evaluate the design.

"It's ridiculous," said Paine. "WinFlop's just a box the size of a pack of cigarettes, with two CD-ROMs the size of stamps inside. They didn't reduce storage size, they just reduced media size."

Microsoft didn't respond to calls on this matter, although an executive was quoted as saying, "we're giving our customers exactly what they said they wanted: software that can fit on a floppy."
