Microsoft Disappointed at Low Windows Source Bids on eBay

Forced to place its flagship Windows source code up for auction on eBay, one of the world's most popular Internet auction sites, Microsoft was disappointed to learn that the bidding has been low.

"Of course we're saddened, but we're still hopeful," said Microsoft President and CEO Bill Gates.

Many of the offers are far lower than the suggested bid of $100 million.

Noah Rent, an unemployed disc jockey, has the highest bid so far -- $3.

"I really don't want to pay more than $2, but I'll gamble," Rent emailed back in response to questioning. "All I really wanted to do is change the 'Start' button label to say, 'Go to Hell.'"

eBay site managers admit it's tough to gauge the public's fickle response.

"The antique forum has a listing for FDR's used chewing gum that's up to $4,000," said manager Gail Wynd. "Maybe Microsoft needs to put a historic spin on it, like say it was based on original Macintosh code, something totally imaginary like that."

Others in the eBay chat area suggested that Microsoft just bundle it with Bill Gates' new book, "The Cool Road to Fingertips."

"Just bind in another CD-ROM," suggested a visitor named NetWit. "I could more drink coasters."
